At a bustling inn, a lovelorn head waiter tries to win his employer’s heart amid a tangle of romantic misunderstandings.
The story
During peak season at the White Horse Inn, head waiter Leopold Brandmeyer keeps overwhelmed guests in good spirits with his singing, though his attempts to charm his employer, Josepha Vogelhuber, are repeatedly rebuffed. Josepha is in love with longtime guest Dr. Otto Siedler, a Berlin lawyer due to arrive that afternoon. His presence unsettles Wilhelm Giesecke, a vacationing hair-restoration tonic manufacturer whose business rival is pursuing a lawsuit against him through Siedler. Giesecke hopes to arrange a match between his daughter Brigitte and his rival’s son, but Brigitte is drawn to Siedler. As romantic interests and business disputes converge at the inn, Leopold’s devotion to Josepha faces a new challenge.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
It is peak season at the “White Horse Inn.” The staff are overwhelmed, but head waiter Leopold Brandmeyer repeatedly manages to calm even the dissatisfied guests with his singing. He has less success charming his boss, Josepha Vogelhuber. His advances are regularly rebuffed by Josepha. She is in love with the Berlin lawyer Dr. Otto Siedler, a longtime regular guest who is expected that afternoon and whom she then greets warmly. When Siedler arrives at the “White Horse Inn,” Giesecke takes note of it with unease. The hair-restoration tonic manufacturer is taking a few days’ vacation only at his daughter’s explicit request. And, of all places, here he is once again confronted with the lawsuit Siedler is pursuing against him on behalf of Siedler’s client Sülzheimer, his archrival. That does not stop Brigitte from yielding to Siedler’s advances; he has fallen head over heels in love with the young woman. Wilhelm Giesecke, meanwhile, has no idea that his plan to pair his daughter off with Sülzheimer’s son is doomed to fail from the outset. When an argument breaks out between Josepha and Leopold, who tells her that Siedler has fallen in love with Brigitte Giesecke, Leopold is fired as a result. Meanwhile, Sigismund, the son of manufacturer Sülzheimer and a notorious womanizer, has also arrived at the hotel. On the way there, he fell in love with Klärchen, the lisping daughter of the eccentric entomologist Professor Hinzelmann. This puts a definitive end to Giesecke’s plan for his daughter and Sigismund Sülzheimer. Fired Leopold feels compelled to take extraordinary measures to open the eyes of his beloved Josepha. He checks into the hotel as a guest and is delighted by the chaos that ensues. In this way, he succeeds in opening Josepha’s eyes and helping her realize how important Leopold is—not only to the hotel. Then it also turns out that the hair-restoration products made by both manufacturers are ineffective on their own, but work extremely well when combined. The two men make peace and drop the ongoing lawsuit. To Brigitte’s relief, her father finally agrees to her relationship with Otto Siedler. All the intrigues and turbulent complications are thus resolved, and Leopold ultimately wins Josepha’s heart. In the end, three engagement celebrations take place at the “White Horse Inn.”
