When a fatal hit-and-run appears linked to her family, pastor and emergency chaplain Judith Ehrmann begins to doubt her husband and son.

The story

Judith Ehrmann is a devoted mother and pastor who also works as an emergency chaplain. When she is called to a serious road accident, a 17-year-old passenger—an acquaintance of her son Paul—has died, and the driver has fled. The sole witness saw a black station wagon, the same kind of car driven by Judith’s husband, Christoph. The next day, when Christoph takes his car to a repair shop over paint damage, Judith begins to suspect he may have caused the crash and is hiding it. She also wonders whether Paul is connected, unsettling her confidence in her family and her pastoral calling.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Judith Ehrmann is a dedicated mother and pastor, and serving as an emergency chaplain is part of her work. Her husband, Christoph, is a high school teacher by profession and a passionate motorcyclist. One day, Judith is called to a serious accident in which the 17-year-old passenger, an acquaintance of her son Paul, who is the same age, dies. The person responsible for the accident flees the scene, but the only witness saw a black station wagon—and Christoph drives just such a car. When her husband takes his station wagon to the repair shop the day after the accident because of paint damage, she begins to believe that Christoph may have caused the accident and is keeping it secret. She also starts to suspect that her own son is connected to the fatal accident. For the first time, doubts take root in Judith’s life: doubts about her husband, her son, and her calling as a pastor and emergency chaplain. When Judith then falls in love with Police Inspector Minow, a convinced atheist who is investigating the case, she begins to reassess her life situation and soon has to rise to the challenge. This is not easy for her, because her marriage is in deep crisis after her husband learns of her suspicions about him. The simplest solution for Judith Ehrmann seems to be accepting a transfer to Berlin. But she fights for her relationship, and in the end succeeds. She keeps a professional distance from Inspector Minow and learns from him that the person responsible for the accident has now been identified.
