The story

One night, her former school friend Mona calls in a panic and begs for help. Nina travels to Ebensee to find her, but Mona’s family gas station is abandoned; a new occupant gives Nina an address for Mona’s father. Nina follows the trail to snow-covered Tyrol, where she meets Gabi, a local young woman who warns her to stay away from the Koflers. Determined to find Mona, Nina hikes to the family’s remote inn, where she discovers signs that her search has led her into danger.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Nina Wagner is a survivor of the events in the first film. She now lives with her mother in Vienna and works in a record store. She seems to have returned to normality and processed her trauma. One night, she gets a call from her school friend Mona Kofler, whom she has not spoken to since the murders. Mona frantically begs for help in broken fragments of speech. Nina goes to Ebensee looking for a clue to Mona’s whereabouts. The Koflers’ gas station has been abandoned, and the Chinese man who has taken it over gives her the forwarding address of Mona’s father. Nina therefore travels to mountainous, snow-covered Tyrol. On the bus to Feichten, Nina meets Gabi, who is about the same age and lives in the village. Nina breaks into Mr. Kofler’s abandoned house and hides when a man in his mid-thirties, Hans Kofler, arrives and sorts through the mail. He drives away in a car marked “Gasthof Joch – Familie Kofler.” Meanwhile, Nina’s worried mother calls the Ebensee police and tells Officer Kogler that Nina has gone there to look for Mona. In Feichten, Nina meets Gabi, who warns her not to go to the Gasthof Joch, because the Koflers are one of those families it is better to have nothing to do with. Nina goes anyway, hiking uphill for three hours to the remote inn, where Josef discovers her in the pigsty and knocks her unconscious. She comes to alone in his hideout, finds chilling keepsakes belonging to a young woman, and hears Mona’s sobbing voice behind a door. Nina finds a way out of the hideout and promises Mona she will get help. By now, Kogler has driven to Feichten while off duty. Gabi offers to take him to Nina. The two drive uphill through the blowing snow. When they arrive, Gabi knocks the police officer out and takes him to Gust Kofler, to whom she is devoted. Gust finds Nina lying close to death in the snow. He takes her to the Gasthof Joch, where he lives with his mother, Gerti, and his two brothers. Locked in a guest room by Gust, Nina persuades Josef to get hold of the key. He then forces her to perform oral sex on him, whereupon Nina bites him until he bleeds and stabs him with the key fob, a roe deer antler. Hans chases Nina through the house and is about to execute her with a captive-bolt gun when the bound Kogler lunges at him. In the ensuing struggle, Nina kills Hans with the captive-bolt gun. Kogler is bleeding from the mouth and cannot be understood. Nina hides him when Gust arrives. She is right to distrust his offer of peace and kills him in a fight with a cleaver and hot lard. Gabi arrives and sees her dead boyfriend, Gust. Nina becomes suspicious of her. Gabi tries to shoot Nina in the back as Nina sets off to find Mona, but the gun is on safety and does not go off in time. After a confrontation with Gerti, Gabi drives down into the valley and dies in a car accident along the way. Nina returns to the old miners’ house where Josef’s hideout is. In a floor hatch, she finds the half-decomposed body of a young woman. She was an earlier victim of Josef’s. When Gerti appears, intent on avenging her three sons, Nina asks her where Mona Kofler is. Gerti says she is dead, whereupon Nina flies into a rage and beats her to death with a hammer. Nina has a flashback and now remembers that Mona died from her injuries in the hospital beside her a year and a half earlier. Kogler joins Nina, and the two make their way down into the valley, bloodstained and staggering. In the final scene, on a sunny day months later, Nina places a flower on Mona’s grave in Ebensee.
