The story
A group of friends—Kris, Colt, Troy, Evan, Ehren, Brodie, and Aurora—discover a locket hanging on the remains of a fire tower. Moments later, the corpse of a serial killer identified as Johnny rises from the ground. Enraged, he roams the woods in search of the locket. The events are largely observed from the killer's perspective as he begins stalking and murdering the teenagers. The film emphasizes a slow, methodical pace, drawing on the atmosphere of a nature documentary to build tension as the group faces a vengeful, resurrected threat.

A group of friends—Kris, Colt, Troy, Evan, Ehren, Brodie, and Aurora—discover a locket hanging on the remains of a fire tower, which Troy pockets. Moments later, the corpse of a serial killer, identified as Johnny, rises from the ground. Enraged, he roams the woods in search of the locket and hears an argument between a hunter and a park ranger. Johnny enters the hunter's house, mistakes a necklace for his locket, and kills the homeowner. Johnny approaches the group at a campfire, drawn by gunfire. Ehren recounts the legend of Johnny, who fell from the firetower decades prior after his father was killed covering up the accident. Johnny kills Ehren, uses his corpse to ransack a park ranger office for weapons and a mask. The next day, Johnny kills Brodie and Aurora. As the remaining friends argue, Johnny injures Troy with an axe. Evan shoots Johnny before being killed. After Colt and Kris arrive at the ranger station, a ranger identifies the locket as the key to keeping Johnny's soul at rest; Johnny then kills the ranger with a log splitter. The two return to the fire tower to trap Johnny, but Colt is killed. Kris leaves the locket on a gas canister and flees. She is picked up by a woman, but the film ends with the gas canister shown missing the locket.
