A hospital doctor’s professional rivalry and family worries collide with an emergency involving an injured pregnant jockey.
The story
During a day at Leipzig’s Scheibenholz Racecourse, Dr. Philipp Brentano is already under strain: he is locked in a bitter contest with Dr. Niklas Ahrend for a senior physician post, and a professional article he wrote has been returned for revision. His wife, Arzu, is concerned about his state of mind and their feverish son, Max. At the same time, jockey Daniela Seibel is preparing to race her horse, Swallow, amid tension between her boyfriend Falk and her disapproving father. A mishap during training leaves Daniela injured, but she still enters the race. When her condition worsens, she is taken to Sachsenklinik, where Brentano and Ahrend disagree over her care.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Dr. Philipp Brentano is the doctor on duty during the races at the Scheibenholz Racecourse in Leipzig. He is currently embroiled in a bitter dispute with Dr. Niklas Ahrend over the senior physician position at Sachsenklinik and sees something being done against him in everything and everyone. This is also the case with a professional article he wrote, which Chief Physician Dr. Roland Heilmann returned to him for revision. Brentano’s wife, Arzu, is there too with their two sons, Oskar and Max. She is worried about Philipp not only because of the arguments, but also about their son Max, who is running a slight fever. Meanwhile, Hospital Administrator Sarah Marquardt, sitting in the stands with Dr. Rolf Kaminski and Health Councillor Jürgen Strauber, is desperately trying to find Hospital Director Prof. Gernot Simoni, who is supposed to present the winner’s wreath for the next race, sponsored by Sachsenklinik. At the betting window, Barbara Grigoleit makes fun of Charlotte Gauss’s hat, when they spot Professor Simoni with his girlfriend Ingrid, who is wearing the same hat as Charlotte. Ingrid no longer wants to watch the races, and Charlotte no longer wants to wear the hat. Daniela Seibel is preparing her horse, Swallow, for the race when her boyfriend, farrier Falk Bürger, drops by. He intends to give her a talisman, but at that moment Daniela’s father Ulrich appears, and he thinks very little of Falk. As Daniela lunges Swallow during the warm-up, Falk comes over again to give her the pendant. Daniela is briefly distracted, and Swallow shies and runs off. Since Daniela has wrapped the lunge line around her wrist, she is dragged along and takes a nasty fall. She is left with a bruise, which she plans to treat with ointment. Falk is supposed to get the ointment from the car for her, but instead discovers a positive pregnancy test. He is disappointed that she did not tell him, but she explains that she herself does not yet know what she wants to do. Shortly afterward, despite her pain, she starts the race and initially takes the lead, until the pain becomes unbearable and she falls from her horse. Dr. Brentano sees this and rushes to her at once. In the meantime, the bruise has become a large hematoma, making admission to Sachsenklinik necessary. When she is brought in, Dr. Ahrend wants to treat her as the doctor on duty, but Dr. Brentano objects because she is his patient. During the ultrasound, he finds that the hematoma has grown, but that the baby is all right. In the meantime, Arzu has come to the hospital with Max, so Dr. Brentano briefly leaves his patient to attend to his son. Dr. Ahrend has already examined Max and made a diagnosis, which naturally does not please Dr. Brentano. Meanwhile, Dr. Ahrend checks on Daniela Seibel and notices a change in her uterus on the ultrasound image that Dr. Brentano missed. He confronts him about it, and Dr. Brentano ends up arguing with both him and Arzu. At the stables, Ulrich Seibel and Falk Bürger run into each other. The vet has just examined Swallow’s injury. Falk wants to know whether it was caused by the hoof, but instead the two argue again about Daniela, culminating in Seibel punching him. He forbids Falk from visiting Daniela at the hospital, but Falk ignores him. When he is in Daniela’s room, Dr. Ahrend gives her the bad diagnosis. He also orders further tests to determine whether it is cancer. A short time later, Daniela’s father arrives at the hospital. When he hears the diagnosis, he has to tell his daughter that her mother died of uterine cancer, not—as Daniela had always believed—during childbirth. Charlotte Gauss has won at the horse races and invites Barbara, Mrs. Marquardt, Dr. Kaminski, and Health Councillor Strauber for a drink. As he did at the awards ceremony, Strauber suddenly feels pain and has to go to the toilet. Dr. Kaminski suspects something is wrong, and he is proved right. When Strauber returns from the toilet, Kaminski asks him about it. It turns out that Strauber most likely has a bladder stone. Before any procedure at the hospital, Dr. Kaminski recommends an old home remedy: warm beer. Events at the hospital grow increasingly tense. Daniela’s father continues to insist on an operation, as does Dr. Ahrend, while Dr. Brentano wants to do a Pap test first. The test shows that no procedure is currently necessary. This does not calm things down, however: Dr. Ahrend and Dr. Brentano continue to argue, and even Dr. Globisch cannot get through to them. But Ulrich Seibel is afraid for his daughter, so he takes advantage of a chaotic moment in the hospital entrance and kidnaps Max in order to force Dr. Brentano to operate on Daniela. Meanwhile, Daniela asks Falk to take her home because she cannot stand being in the hospital any longer. Dr. Brentano and Dr. Ahrend are just being dressed down by Dr. Heilmann when Arzu rushes into the office to tell Philipp about the kidnapping. She is worried about Max because he is supposed to take antibiotics every four hours. Dr. Heilmann suggests calling the police, but Arzu refuses because Seibel said he would hurt Max if she contacted them. Dr. Heilmann wants to make sure, though, and calls the police. By chance, Detectives Katzer and Hundt are in the nurses’ room after having had an accident, and Prof. Simoni gave them first aid. Ingrid Rischke has accompanied them to the hospital. Katzer and Hundt identify themselves as police officers and take over the case. First, Daniela and Falk need to return to the hospital, so Arzu and Niklas drive to the blacksmith’s shop to tell them what is happening and bring them back. When they arrive, Daniela’s father is on the phone, demanding that the doctors let him watch the operation through a mobile-phone video call. Since Daniela is in pain again anyway, Falk takes her to the hospital. Arzu and Niklas drive to the stables, where they suspect Daniela’s father is with Max. By then, however, he has fled to the Mining and Technology Park, which they do not know. As they search the stables, Arzu opens the door of a horse stall after hearing a noise. She is suddenly in danger when the horse kicks out. Niklas saves her at the last moment, but suffers a concussion and a cut on his head in the fall. Ulrich Seibel contacts Dr. Brentano again while on the way. Brentano has to stall him because Daniela has not yet arrived at the hospital. She has lost consciousness on the way, so Falk has stopped. Dr. Heilmann and Dr. Globisch help him keep up the ruse. When Seibel calls again, Daniela is still not in the operating room. But at that very moment, she arrives. She demands that her father bring Max back first, before she agrees to have the operation. Then her father collapses with cardiogenic shock. His phone falls to the ground, allowing Dr. Heilmann to see on its screen where he is. He contacts the detectives, who head there with Arzu. Max finally gets his medicine, and then Arzu has to help save Ulrich Seidel. She does so with a well-aimed punch to his chest, after which he regains consciousness. Meanwhile, Dr. Heilmann operates on the bleeding in Daniela’s hematoma, but complications arise. Fortunately, they are overcome, and the operation succeeds without damaging the uterus. Dr. Brentano treats Dr. Ahrend at the same time, and the two finally realize what a mess they have made. Arzu arrives with Max and sees that everything can turn out all right. Dr. Brentano also learns from Dr. Heilmann that he will be the new senior physician. After all the upheaval, Arzu and Philipp thank Detectives Katzer and Hundt and say goodbye to them outside the hospital as they have to return to Weimar.
