The story

Frankfurt am Main during Carnival in 1974 is the setting for two women moving independently through the city. Inge Maier is a “sex thief”: after sleeping with men, she steals their wallets without their noticing, explaining that she is making up for promises that fall short. Rita Müller-Eisert, an East German spy, is meant to report on life in West Germany. Their paths and purposes are distinct as the city provides a backdrop of social unrest: Rita witnesses an eviction operation targeting squatters and a strike in front of the opera house.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Frankfurt am Main during Carnival in 1974: Two women with different goals are out and about in the city independently of one another. One is named Inge Maier and is a “sex thief.” After sleeping with men, she then steals from them without their noticing. To explain this, she says: “What men promise always turns out, afterwards, to be too little. I make up for this shortfall by taking their wallets.” The other is Rita Müller-Eisert, an East German spy who is supposed to report on life in West Germany. While Inge sleeps with the deputy police chief, Rita witnesses an eviction operation targeting squatters, as well as a strike in front of the opera house.
