A professor with amnesia must navigate a deadly trail of clues left by a scientist who created a global biological threat.

The story

After helping the Holy See deal with an antimatter threat, Harvard University professor Robert Langdon awakens in a hospital in Florence, Italy, with no memory of the previous days. He is attended by Dr. Sienna Brooks, who informs him he is suffering from amnesia caused by a head wound. Their situation turns dire when an assassin, Vayentha, attacks the hospital. The pair flees together, discovering a mysterious device containing a map of hell. They soon realize they are following a trail left by the late scientist Bertrand Zobrist, who created a biological superweapon capable of devastating the world's population. They must navigate a web of clues while being hunted by both government agents and a private security firm.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Following the discovery of a biological weapon called 'Inferno' created by the late Bertrand Zobrist, Robert Langdon and Dr. Sienna Brooks follow a trail of clues through Florence and Venice. They are pursued by Vayentha (working for 'The Consortium') and government agents led by Elizabeth Sinskey. Along the way, they encounter Christophe Bouchard, who initially seems an ally but is revealed to be seeking profit from the weapon. Langdon eventually learns that his memory loss was induced by drugs and that the hospital stay was staged. The trail leads to the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. It is revealed that Sienna was Zobrist's lover and intended to release the weapon. In a final confrontation in the Basilica Cistern, the weapon is located in a bag underwater. While the agents and Langdon attempt to secure it, Sienna triggers a blast to release the weapon. The weapon is ultimately contained by Sinskey's team, and Langdon returns to Florence to hide the final clue, the Dante death mask.
