A couple on vacation in a fictional country discovers a dark, high-priced system of justice involving clones.
The story
Novelist James Foster and his wife Em spend time at a resort in the fictional seaside country of Li Tolqa, where a local festival is underway. The couple's implied marital strife is exacerbated when Gabi, a fan of James' only published novel, invites them to spend time with her and her husband Alban. The four have dinner and spend the next day driving in the countryside, even though they have been warned that tourists are to remain on the resort grounds at all times. After a series of events, the couple finds themselves entangled in the country's dark culture and a unique system of justice for foreign nationals.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Novelist James Foster and his wife Em are vacationing in the fictional country of Li Tolqa. After a night of drinking and a car accident that kills a local man, James is arrested. Due to a unique diplomatic agreement, he pays a fee to have a clone created; his duplicate is executed by the victim's son while the real James remains. He then joins a group of other wealthy tourists who have also paid to have their clones executed. The group encourages James to embrace a life of crime and hedonism. He is eventually tricked into brutalizing a clone he believes is a detective, and later, he is forced by Gabi's group to ritualistically kill another clone. After being abandoned by his wife, who finds him intolerable, James is eventually left alone at the resort as the monsoon season begins, having been psychologically broken by the experience.
