A woman torn between an expected marriage and a new love must decide what future she truly wants.

The story

Hilla Svensson is preparing to marry Max Falin, a lawyer at his father’s firm, but his apparent indifference during her wedding-dress fitting leaves her overwhelmed. She runs into Frederik Lindberg, a former first officer who has quit his ship after clashing with its captain over safety. Hilla feels she recognizes him, though she cannot place him. Seeking distance from Max, she visits her grandmother Emma in the countryside where she grew up. Emma expects Hilla to take over her publishing house after the wedding, while Hilla and Frederik begin to spend time together and reconnect through memories of childhood. Their growing closeness complicates the future others have planned for her.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Frederik Lindberg leaves the ship where he works as first officer because he disagrees with Captain Olsson. He accuses him of neglecting safety. At the same time, Hilla Svensson is having a fitting for her wedding dress. Her fiancé, Max Falin, a lawyer at his father’s firm, seems distracted and has no opinion about the dress. It all becomes too much for Hilla, and she storms out of the shop, where she runs into Frederik and asks what he thinks of the dress. Frederik says he would marry her in a heartbeat if she weren’t already spoken for. Somehow, she feels she knows the man but can’t say from where. After arguing with Max, Hilla visits her grandmother in the countryside, where she grew up. Emma cannot understand Hilla, because she has big plans for her. Once Hilla is married, she is supposed to take over Emma’s publishing house. Christian, the secretary and Frederik’s great-uncle, is the only one who understands Hilla, but he does not dare say anything to his employer. Frederik visits his great-uncle and offers to help when the gardener is unavailable. While out riding, Hilla encounters Frederik and now realizes where she knows the man she met outside the shop in Stockholm from. Soon the two spend a lot of time together and share stories from their childhoods. They fall in love, but Hilla knows this must not happen. When Emma learns about the romance, she orders Frederik to stop seeing Hilla. Christian hears this too, but once again holds back out of loyalty to Emma. A short time later, Frederik has an appointment concerning the matter with his old job. There he meets Max Falin, who is the captain’s lawyer. At that point, however, he does not yet know that Max is Hilla’s fiancé. Because Emma is having heart problems, she pressures Max to move up the wedding with Hilla. She will not have the operation until the two are married. Emma holds a summer party at her estate with the aim of handing the company over to Hilla. But during the party, she collapses and has to be rushed to hospital. After that, events unfold rapidly. Hilla refuses to admit her love for Frederik, Frederik runs away, and Christian resigns because he can no longer bear it. He has always been in love with Emma, but the rules of social class made a relationship impossible. After Hilla finally becomes sure of her feelings for Frederik, she goes to Stockholm and tells Max the truth. She then happens to run into Christian. He tells her where Frederik is at that moment. After another heart attack, Christian also returns to Emma. She, too, has finally come to realize her feelings and confesses her love to him. Hilla and Frederik finally get together as well. Frederik wins the case and becomes captain.
