The story

Conductor Stine Sunström returns from Rome to her hometown of Norrköping to put her life in order and lead the summer concert. There she encounters Mads, her former love, who is now a sailing instructor to Lene, the girl Stine presents as her sister. In truth, Lene is Stine’s daughter, born when Stine was sixteen; her mother Birgit concealed the truth to protect Stine’s future. Stine wants to tell Lene before taking her to Rome after the summer, but Birgit objects. At rehearsals, Stine also faces resistance from concertmaster Hugo, who refuses to accept a woman conducting the orchestra.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

When conductor Stine Sunström returns from Rome to her hometown of Norrköping to put a few things in her life in order and conduct the summer concert, she has no idea that the first person she will run into is her old love, Mads. He is the sailing instructor of her sister Lene, who is actually her daughter. But when Stine became pregnant at 16, her mother, Birgit, did not want her to ruin her future, so she pretended to be Lene’s mother. Stine tells her mother that it is time to tell Lene the truth, since she wants to take her to Rome after the summer, which does not sit well with Birgit. Stine also has problems with the orchestra at the first rehearsal, because the concertmaster, Hugo, refuses to accept a woman conductor. Later, when Stine gets home, she runs into him there too: he used to be her mother’s boyfriend and wants to be again. By chance, Hugo later overhears a conversation between Birgit and Stine and finds out that Lene is Stine’s daughter. Mads meets up with Stine and tells her that he is now married to Martha, but that they have not had children because Martha, as a psychologist, has no time for that. Lene tells her sister how much she likes Oliver. It turns out that he plays in the orchestra as a young pianist, and Stine is not at all happy that he spends so much time with Lene instead of practicing. When Stine and Mads meet at their old secret place, they grow close again and sleep together. Afterwards, Stine confesses that Lene is their daughter, but that she does not know it yet. Mads is so shocked that he has to talk to his wife about it, and also admits to her that he slept with Stine. When Hugo again badmouths Stine at another rehearsal, she asks him to demonstrate his version of the piece. He feels insulted and loudly blurts out that Lene is Stine’s daughter. What neither of them knows is that Lene and Mads are sitting in the audience and have been listening to the rehearsal. Lene runs off, and Mads and Stine follow her. She does not want to talk to her mother, but Mads at least manages to calm her down when he tells her that until recently, he did not know either. Stine now has an idea for resolving at least the problems with the orchestra: she suggests performing not Beethoven’s piece, but her own symphony, which she wrote for Mads. Mads has realized that his marriage to Martha has no future, because even at night she spends more time on her patients than on him. Lene wants to visit Oliver before the concert and finds him with Barbara. She then asks her mother if she knew about it, and Stine says she once saw the two of them together. At least Lene now accepts that Stine is her mother, not her sister, but thinks that Birgit is her mother too, since she raised her. At the concert, Stine enchants everyone with her symphony, including Hugo. He changes his mind about her and offers her the permanent position as conductor of the orchestra, since they need a new conductor. When Stine looks for Mads, her mother tells her she suspects he is waiting for her at their favorite place. She finds him there, and tells him she will stay in Norrköping. They both admit that they never stopped loving each other.
