To save her struggling art gallery, Nina lets her roommate’s fake engagement become a family-wide deception.
The story
Young Nina Finndal is struggling to keep her Stockholm art gallery afloat and earns money as a dog sitter, while hiding the gallery’s troubles from her father, Carl. When Nina’s sister calls to invite her to Carl’s birthday, Nina is in the shower; her roommate, hairdresser Lasse Hellström, answers and pretends to be Nina’s fiancé. He persuades Nina to go along with the story, believing the deception could help her gallery. At her childhood home, the pair initially convince Carl that they are a happy couple, and he is pleased with his supposed future son-in-law, whom he thinks is a successful doctor. Meanwhile, Nina keeps meeting neighboring farmer Jonas Jensson, and their relationship begins to develop.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Young Nina Finndal has to make ends meet as a dog sitter because her Stockholm art gallery is on the verge of bankruptcy. She does not want to admit this to her father, an admiral with whom she has had difficulties since her mother’s death. While Nina is in the shower, her sister Laura calls to invite her to their father’s birthday. Nina’s gay roommate, hairdresser Lasse Hellström, answers the phone and promptly pretends to be Nina’s fiancé. Laura then invites them both, and Nina is about to expose the deception, but Lasse persuades her to use the situation to her gallery’s financial advantage. When they arrive at her childhood home, Nina and Lasse successfully play the part of a happy couple at first, and Carl Finndal also gets along very well with his “son-in-law,” whom he believes to be a successful doctor. Meanwhile, Nina often meets the neighboring farmer Jonas Jensson, and the two slowly fall in love. Nina, however, says nothing about her “engagement” and becomes increasingly entangled in lies. But she is not the only one with a secret: her father Carl, who is secretly in love with the Italian cook Antonella Vespucci, tries to stop her from returning to Italy by secretly running a small vineyard. At Carl’s birthday party, everything finally comes to a head: when Jonas learns that Nina is “engaged,” the young woman promptly lays all the lies bare in front of the assembled guests, which her father initially resents. Only later do they reconcile at Nina’s mother’s grave. In the end, Nina and Jonas, as well as Carl and Antonella, get together, and after her father gives her financial support, things are going well again at Nina’s gallery.
