Full plot (contains spoilers)
Nike Hanson and her boyfriend, Bertil Berg, want to emigrate to Los Angeles to open a restaurant. Before they leave, Nike wants to visit her parents in Eriksberg, store her furniture there, and help with the anniversary celebration. Nike’s mother, Elisabeth, runs a bookshop that has been there for 25 years. Dr. Patrick Meller is the village’s new doctor, and he asks Elisabeth for advice because his medical assistant, Silke, has a birthday coming up and he wants to give her a book. As Nike drives her van off the ferry, she nearly runs over a woman who is taking photographs of birds. Somehow, Nike feels she knows the woman. When she arrives at her mother’s, she clumsily injures her head and goes to the doctor. There she meets Dr. Meller, who treats her. Later, when she goes shopping at the market, they run into each other again. Since he has the afternoon off, he offers to help with the cooking. Elisabeth and her husband, Mats, are worried because the new owner of the building where the bookshop is located has terminated their lease. The stranger from the ferry terminal is called Carlotta Stone and comes from Boston. She sneaks around the Hansons’ house and watches Nike. Later, Elisabeth sees the woman in the cemetery, but before she can get a closer look, she has disappeared again. Nike spontaneously invites Patrick to dinner because he has been so helpful. When they say goodbye afterward, feelings stir in both of them. The next morning, Nike goes jogging and comes across Carlotta. When Carlotta has a dizzy spell, Nike takes her home. Elisabeth now has confirmation that she knows the woman from the cemetery: Carlotta is her sister, whom she has not seen for 25 years. Nike accompanies Carlotta to Dr. Meller, who diagnoses nothing more than low blood pressure. Afterward, Nike asks Carlotta to stay with them. Later, when Nike goes to a farm to order chickens for the celebration, she happens to run into Patrick, who is making a house call there. They go for a walk together, and Patrick spontaneously kisses her. Nike is completely confused. At home, Carlotta and Elisabeth argue about Nike. That evening, Nike visits Patrick at his house. She needs someone to talk to because she is worried about her parents. When they go fishing together the next morning, they grow close again. Afterward, she confronts her parents, telling them she knows they are having trouble with the shop. She wants to offer her help, but they reject it. That evening, Patrick and Nike plan to grill their catch from that morning when Milly suddenly turns up. She claims to be Patrick’s girlfriend. Nike is disappointed and goes home. There, she overhears a conversation between Carlotta and Elisabeth and learns that Carlotta is her biological mother, but that she did not want Nike. Elisabeth tries to explain how it came about, but Nike is completely disappointed in both of them and runs off. The next morning, when Carlotta once again tries to run away from her problems, she collapses again. Patrick tells her she must finally get herself examined. But Carlotta is afraid. At this point, Patrick also learns that Carlotta is Nike’s biological mother. Nike has returned to Stockholm and meets Bertil to tell him she would rather fly to L.A. straight away. Patrick goes looking for her. He finds her and tries to talk her out of it, making it clear that she is about to make a big mistake. Sam, Carlotta’s husband, arrives in Eriksberg. Elisabeth tells him that Carlotta has gone to Stockholm. Nike and Patrick hear about this and go looking for her. Nike also tries to talk some sense into her, and Carlotta explains her fears to her. At last, Carlotta agrees to get examined. It turns out that she is only suffering from iron deficiency. Nike goes with Patrick to her apartment. He tries to persuade her, but Nike does not want to disappoint Bertil, so Patrick goes home. The next morning, Sam arrives in Stockholm and meets Nike, who is desperate to know from her mother why she gave her up. Carlotta tells her the whole story, but has to admit that she does not know who Nike’s father is. Nike tries to understand Carlotta, but finds it difficult. Later, she talks to Patrick on the phone. He accuses her of being unable to make up her mind and hangs up. She then realizes what she has done wrong and talks it over with Bertil. When Patrick comes to see her in Stockholm the next morning, he is stunned when she tells him she is staying. They return to Eriksberg together, where Nike makes up with Elisabeth and Mats. Carlotta and Sam also show up at the anniversary celebration to announce to everyone that they have bought the building housing Elisabeth’s bookshop, so she can keep her shop. Patrick is only worried because he is getting two mothers-in-law.
