Full plot (contains spoilers)
Inge Larsen, a fisherman's daughter, falls in love with Baron Kerr, who is recovering at her parents’ home after getting into trouble at sea during a storm. Kerr is also taken with the young woman, and soon asks her to marry him. Inge leaves her parents and her friend, the fisherman Jan Olsen, behind as she begins a completely unfamiliar new life with Kerr. Through her marriage to an influential diplomat, she now belongs to the upper social class, which includes the high nobility. Inge’s rival is the capricious Evelyne, who was involved with Kerr before his marriage. After the young couple have a child, Inge considers being with her child more important than attending social engagements. Evelyne is increasingly seen at Kerr’s side. Straightforward and honest, Inge is hardly a match for this scheming woman. Although Kerr is the one cheating on his wife with Evelyne, he accuses Inge of infidelity. His excuse is that he saw Jan Olsen leaving his house. But Inge had only treated Jan’s injuries, which he sustained during a brawl he got caught up in while visiting a nightclub. Another dramatic incident leads Inge to return to her parents’ home after she and her husband decide to divorce. Now nothing stands in the way of her finding happiness with Jan, who is much better suited to her.
