The story
Ghodrat, a young man with an intellectual disability, lives with the caretaker of a shrine in a village. The caretaker believes the villagers’ neglect reflects their lack of faith, while the villagers feel the shrine has never answered their prayers or met their needs. When the caretaker temporarily leaves for the city and nobody else agrees to take responsibility, he appoints Ghodrat in his place. Ghodrat can perceive spirits of the dead in the neighboring cemetery, and through them he learns about the villagers’ problems. He begins using the shrine’s property to help the villagers, setting up a conflict over the shrine and its resources.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Ghodrat is a young man with an intellectual disability who lives with the caretaker of a shrine in a village. The caretaker is upset that the villagers pay no attention to the shrine, and blames it on their lack of faith. The villagers, however, believe the shrine has never fulfilled their needs or answered their prayers. The caretaker temporarily goes to the city and, since no one is willing to take charge of the shrine while he is away, leaves Ghodrat in his place. Able to perceive the spirits of the dead in the cemetery beside the shrine, Ghodrat learns about the villagers’ problems and uses the shrine’s property to help solve them. Before long, the shrine is stripped of its carpets, roof, walls, and money. One night, when the village shepherd’s daughter’s flock has scattered, Ghodrat, who is fond of her, spends the entire night standing with a lamp in his hand until the whole flock gathers around him and inside the shrine. The next morning, Ghodrat sets off by train for a destination he believes is where “Agha” lives.
