Full plot (contains spoilers)

The story is set among the indigenous people of a village in Bali. Wajan, the son of an old witch, whom the entire village lives in great fear of, has fallen in love with Sari, the daughter of the wealthy merchant Lombos. Lombos, however, does not want Sari to marry the descendant of this sorceress. Wajan and the girl therefore have to meet in secret, for example while working in the rice fields or at dances. One day, great calamity befalls the island, bringing illness, death, and destruction. The villagers immediately blame the sorceress, who is said to have unleashed this curse through her magical powers. These events make things even harder for the young lovers. Only after the village’s respected priest frees the villagers from the supposed curse can Wajan and Sari openly live out their happiness. A grand celebration is organized, with traditional Balinese ceremonies and dances, to express gratitude for having been saved from great misfortune.
