As Riley enters her teenage years, her internal world is disrupted by the arrival of new, complex emotions.
The story
Two years after moving to San Francisco, 13-year-old Riley Andersen is preparing to enter high school. Her internal world is managed by five core emotions: Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. However, as Riley approaches a pivotal age, her mind undergoes a transformation, triggering the arrival of new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui. These newcomers clash with the original emotions over how to navigate Riley's growing complexities. The conflict intensifies as Riley prepares for a three-day ice hockey camp, where the struggle to maintain her identity while facing the pressures of adolescence puts her internal harmony at risk.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two years after moving to San Francisco, 13-year-old Riley Andersen enters high school. Her core emotions—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger—manage her 'Sense of Self.' When a 'puberty alarm' sounds before a three-day ice hockey camp, the system is upgraded, and four new emotions—Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui—arrive. Anxiety, focused on Riley's success, eventually takes control, causing the original emotions to be locked in a vault. Anxiety's dominance leads to a fractured Sense of Self, causing Riley to perform poorly and suffer a panic attack. The original emotions eventually break free and reunite with Joy. They work together to resolve the conflict, ultimately creating a new Sense of Self that incorporates both good and bad memories. The film ends with Riley successfully completing her tryouts and maintaining her friendships while the nine emotions work together to support her.
