Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 2007, teenager Quinn Brenner meets with retired demonologist Elise Rainier to contact the spirit of her deceased mother, Lily. Elise warns Quinn of a malevolent force, but after Quinn is struck by a car while distracted by a mysterious figure, she is left trapped at home with her father, Sean, and brother, Alex. The house becomes plagued by paranormal activity, specifically from a spirit known as the Man Who Can't Breathe. Sean seeks help from Elise, who is initially reluctant due to her own fears of a spirit called the Bride in Black. Eventually, Elise is convinced by her colleague Carl to help. When the family hires fraudulent demonologists, Quinn is briefly possessed by the Man Who Can't Breathe. Elise arrives and enters the 'Further' to confront the spirit. Inside, she discovers her late husband's spirit, who is actually the Man Who Can't Breathe in disguise. Elise manages to get Quinn into the Further, where Quinn must face the spirit alone. With help from the spirit of her mother, Lily, Quinn finds the strength to pull off the spirit's mask, defeating it. Quinn is released, and Elise forms a new partnership with the fraudulent duo to continue her work. However, the film ends with Elise's dog barking at a nearby demon with a red face watching her.
