The story
In Pittsburgh, 1999, a young woman named Gemma witnesses her mother's death under mysterious circumstances. Two decades later, Gemma is a single mother and dental hygienist living in her childhood home. While walking her daughter Maya home from school, she encounters a group of elderly people. Her life takes a terrifying turn when she begins to experience visions of her mother's past and finds herself haunted by malevolent forces. After a mysterious incident at a dental clinic, Gemma is thrust into the 'Further,' a supernatural realm, and must seek help from a mysterious woman named Elise to navigate the dangers of the spirit world.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 1999, Gemma witnesses her mother Ingrid's death in a supernatural event. In the present, Gemma is a single mother and dental hygienist. After seeing elderly people and experiencing visions of her mother, she is knocked unconscious at a clinic and enters the 'Further.' She meets Elise, who explains that Gemma is a 'courier' and that a cult leader named Cyrus Lam is using her to resurrect spirits. Gemma discovers that her mother was also a courier who died to protect her. During a confrontation, Cyrus uses Gemma's daughter, Maya, to bring his followers into the real world. Gemma and Elise eventually trap Cyrus in a 'Red Door' in the Further, where he is consumed by the spirits he tried to resurrect. Gemma eventually reunites with her family in the real world.
