Full plot (contains spoilers)
In 2019, Josh Lambert lives a fractured life, haunted by repressed memories of a past possession. His relationship with his 19-year-old son, Dalton, is strained. While Dalton attends art school, he draws a red door—the gateway to 'The Further.' Josh is haunted by the spirit of his father, Ben, whom he believed abandoned them. Dalton attends a party where he sees a ghost and, after a mishap, finds himself in The Further. His friend Chris is attacked by a red-faced demon. Dalton calls his brother, Foster, whose memories of a past trauma help Dalton realize the danger. Dalton is pulled into The Further, where he faces the demon and a vision of his father. Meanwhile, Josh learns from his ex-wife, Renai, that his father also had the ability to project and was institutionalized. Renai and Josh enter The Further to rescue Dalton. They find him trapped; the demon possesses him to attack Chris. Josh manages to free Dalton, and they flee toward the red door. Josh stays behind to hold the door shut, allowing Dalton to escape. Dalton returns to the living world and paints over his drawing, sealing the door. Josh meets his father's spirit and eventually reconciles with Dalton, while a post-credits scene shows the door's light flickering back on.
