A psychiatrist in Washington, D.C., must navigate a growing threat of emotionless beings after a space shuttle crash releases mysterious alien spores.

The story

After a Space Shuttle crashes on Earth, an intelligent fungus-like organism is discovered on the scattered wreckage across the United States. Soon afterward, people begin behaving strangely, showing detachment and a loss of emotion. Among the first affected is Tucker Kaufman, a CDC official investigating the crash. His ex-wife, psychiatrist Carol Bennell, notices that patients and friends insist that their loved ones are "not themselves," while her young son Oliver observes similar unusual behavior in his peers. On Halloween, Oliver finds a disturbing patch of skin on a partygoer, which Carol connects to reports of a mysterious flu. She begins to realize the scope of the threat as she encounters others who have been transformed.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After a Space Shuttle crashes on Earth, an intelligent fungus-like organism is discovered on the wreckage. People begin behaving strangely, showing a loss of emotion. Carol Bennell, a psychiatrist, and her son Oliver notice the change in their community. They discover that the organism takes control of people during REM sleep, while those with certain conditions are immune. Oliver is one such immune individual. Carol eventually confronts Tucker Kaufman, who tries to convince her that the altered humans represent a better world; he infects her by spitting in her face. She escapes and joins forces with her friend Ben and Oliver. While a team of scientists at Fort Detrick works on a cure using Oliver's immunity, Carol and Ben are eventually separated. Ben is converted by the organism and tries to persuade Carol to join them, but she flees. Ultimately, the scientists create a vaccine that eradicates the epidemic. Those who were changed regain their emotions and memories, and Carol and Ben are reunited as the threat is eliminated.
