A man discovers that his town is being systematically replaced by emotionless extraterrestrial duplicates.

The story

In the fictional California town of Santa Mira, a mysterious extraterrestrial invasion begins. Alien plant spores have fallen from space, growing into seed pods that produce visually identical copies of humans. These duplicates possess the physical traits and memories of the originals but are devoid of all human emotion. A local doctor begins to uncover this 'quiet' invasion and attempts to stop it as the scale of the threat becomes clear.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

A psychiatrist, Dr. Hill, is told the story of a man named Dr. Miles Bennell, who was held in custody after witnessing a terrifying transformation in the town of Santa Mira. Miles recounts how he and his girlfriend, Becky, discovered that local residents were being replaced by emotionless 'pod people' created by extraterrestrial seeds. After finding a body in a friend's basement and discovering duplicates in a greenhouse, Miles and Becky realize the entire town has been compromised. They manage to escape a group of hostile 'pod people' but eventually find themselves alone in a mine. During a moment of vulnerability, Becky is replaced by a pod person. The film concludes with a frame story where Dr. Hill confirms the threat is real after a truck carrying pods is found at a crash site, leading him to alert the authorities.
