Full plot (contains spoilers)
A police sergeant, Graziano, is assigned to protect Judge Cancedda, and the two quickly become friends. The officer soon realizes the dangers the magistrate is facing because of his work and tries in vain to persuade him to stop. After Cancedda is murdered, Graziano has to provide protection for another judge, Moser, an ambiguous figure with ties to rogue intelligence services. The ending is surprising and bitter in this perhaps underrated film by Damiani, featuring an excellent performance by Volonté.
