Tony Stark must confront the psychological toll of his heroism while facing a mysterious terrorist threat.
The story
Following the events of The Avengers, Tony Stark struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder and panic attacks. While he attempts to manage his mental state by building numerous Iron Man suits, a series of bombings occurs across the United States, attributed to a mysterious terrorist known as the Mandarin. After his security chief is injured, Stark issues a public challenge to the Mandarin, leading to a direct attack on his home. Forced to flee, Stark ends up in rural Tennessee, where he must navigate the fallout of the attacks and the mystery of the technology behind them while trying to protect those around him from the escalating threat.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After a series of bombings attributed to the Mandarin, Tony Stark's home is destroyed, and he flees to rural Tennessee in a prototype suit. There, he discovers the explosions were caused by the failure of 'Extremis,' a regenerative treatment developed by Maya Hansen and Aldrich Killian. Killian, who has used Extremis to overcome his own physical disabilities, is the true mastermind behind the chaos. He uses the Mandarin—actually an actor named Trevor Slattery—as a front for his activities. While Stark investigates the truth, he faces off against Killian's henchmen and eventually infiltrates a headquarters in Miami. He discovers that Killian has subjected Stark's girlfriend, Pepper Potts, to Extremis. In the climax, Stark and his ally James Rhodes (the Iron Patriot) confront Killian on an oil tanker. Stark manages to save the President of the United States, while Pepper survives the Extremis procedure. In the aftermath, Stark destroys his suit collection and prepares to live a more grounded life, finally finding peace with his identity as Iron Man.
