The story
In Pittsburgh, a man uses a sniper rifle to kill five people on the river's North Shore Trail. The Pittsburgh Police find a shell casing and a coin with a fingerprint belonging to James Barr, an ex-US Army sniper. When Barr is captured, he writes 'GET JACK REACHER' on a legal pad. Jack Reacher, a drifter and former U.S. Army Military Police Corps investigator, arrives at the station. He is eventually hired by a defense attorney to investigate the case, leading him to uncover inconsistencies in the crime scene and realize that someone wants him to drop his investigation.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After a sniper kills five people in Pittsburgh, the police identify the shooter as James Barr. Barr, in a coma, writes 'GET JACK REACHER' on a notepad. Reacher, a former military investigator, arrives and is hired by Barr's attorney, Helen Rodin. Reacher discovers that Barr was a soldier with a history of violence and that the current crime was not random; it was linked to a local construction company owned by Oline Archer, who refused to sell to a Russian-mob-owned corporation. Reacher discovers that the real killer is Charlie, who works for a mob-led firm headed by Zek Chelovek. After Helen is kidnapped by Zek's men, Reacher teams up with a Marine, Martin Cash, to fight through the henchmen and eventually confront Zek. Reacher kills Zek and the henchmen. In the aftermath, Barr awakens and admits he has no memory of the crime but believes he is guilty, while Reacher is seen on a bus, intervening in a confrontation with a man abusing a woman.
