A disgruntled teenager finds tentative confidence through writing and an invitation to sing in a rock band.
The story
Aurore, 13, is angry with nearly everyone around her and feels she is failing at school, leaving her with little confidence. Her patient parents sometimes lose their temper when she lashes out, while she distances herself from her best friend. When her French teacher goes on sick leave, substitute Sébastien Couette notices signs of literary talent in Aurore and gives her a book by Francis Ponge. Though literature reminds her of school and its frustrations, she eventually reads it. Meanwhile, three older teenagers invite her to sing in their rock band. Secretly in love with the drummer, Aurore must contend with her own prickly reactions as the group proposes a concert that would put her before an audience.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Aurore is an unbearable 13-year-old who is angry at everything: her parents, boys, her teachers, and even, one fine day, her best friend, who had been the last slender thread still connecting her to society. Her biggest problem is that she feels she is bad at school and has lost all confidence in herself. Although her parents are very patient, sometimes they despair and snap when she answers them like a brat. One day, while her French teacher is on sick leave, the substitute, Sébastien Couette, an eccentric and sometimes teasing character, manages to restore a little of her self-confidence when he spots the beginnings of a literary talent in her. Mr. Couette gives her a book by Francis Ponge, which Aurore eventually reads, despite her disdain for literature, which reminds her too much of school and her suffering there. At the same time, three young people who are four years older than her invite her to become the singer in their rock band. Secretly in love with the drummer, she nevertheless struggles to fit into the group because of her impossible temperament and her knee-jerk reactions. One day, they suggest putting on a concert where she will have to sing in front of an audience—the ultimate ordeal for someone who hates society.
