Full plot (contains spoilers)
Jane Eyre, an orphan who endured a cruel upbringing and a strict education at Lowood School, finds work as a governess at Thornfield Hall. She becomes the ward of Edward Rochester, who is captivated by her 'openness and unpolluted mind.' Despite his impending engagement to Blanche Ingram, Jane and Rochester share a passionate connection. However, the truth is revealed when a lawyer discloses that Rochester is already married to Bertha, a woman kept hidden in a secret room who has descended into madness. Wounded by his deception, Jane flees Thornfield. After a period of recovery at Moor House, she inherits a fortune from her uncle. She eventually returns to Thornfield to find it a ruin destroyed by Bertha's fire. There, she reunites with a now-blind Rochester, and the two are finally reunited.
