Full plot (contains spoilers)
Katlewski is in his mid-twenties and a miner from Recklinghausen. One day he disappears and spends a week walking through the underground passages to a Dortmund coal mine, where he is found ten days later, completely distraught. Katlewski can no longer cope with his old life and, to put it behind him, has to pay off a loan in addition to his failed marriage. While looking for a shower, he meets the young Ulli, who rents a room from the Grueten family, and falls in love with her. At the bank, he shows her that the loan cannot be canceled without cash. Katlewski tries to earn the money through various odd jobs, such as working as a gatekeeper or truck driver, but keeps quitting. Eventually, he takes the money from a former employer and pays off the loan. At a construction site, he takes possession of a chainsaw and makes one last trip to Recklinghausen in a stolen truck. “The day will come when the saw wants to saw.”
