A desperate young man is manipulated into pursuing a beggar’s seemingly precious find in the hard streets of Hamburg.

The story

In Hamburg’s harbor milieu during the late years of the Weimar Republic, an aging beggar finds a pearl necklace in the street, apparently lost by an elegant lady. A prostitute witnesses the discovery and follows him, hoping to take the apparently valuable jewelry. The beggar shares his home with a young unemployed man, whom the prostitute quickly draws into a romantic attachment. She urges him to rob his roommate, presenting the find as something worth stealing. With hardship driving people to look out for themselves, the young man becomes willing to do almost anything to prove himself to her, while the old man guards his find carefully.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

In the milieu of Hamburg’s harbor during the late years of the Weimar Republic, an aging beggar finds a pearl necklace in the street that an elegant lady has lost. A prostitute sees him find it and follows him, hoping for a chance to wrest the seemingly valuable find from him. The beggar lives with a young unemployed man. The prostitute tries to win the naïve young man over, and he does indeed fall in love with her quickly. But the prostitute has only one thing in mind: she wants the young man to rob the old man, his roommate. Times are hard, and everyone looks out for themselves. Believing that the woman is genuinely interested in him, the unemployed man is ready to do anything, even commit an act of violence. And so the young man tries with all his might to take from his roommate the piece of jewelry that seems so valuable, which the old man carefully guards in his breast pouch like a treasure. But the old man proves tougher than expected. The beggar flees from the violent young man, falls into the water, and drowns, clutching the supposedly precious piece of jewelry tightly. Soon afterward, a tiny item appears in the newspaper: an old man was fished out of the water, and he had a worthless imitation piece of jewelry on him. The prostitute consequently has no further use for the utterly desperate young man, and so she immediately hooks herself another patron for the next night: a very fat gentleman.
