A biographical drama tracing the life of Steve Jobs from his college dropout years to the launch of the iPod.

The story

In 1974, Steve Jobs drops out of Reed College but continues to attend classes, where he develops an interest in calligraphy. After spending time in India exploring philosophical ideas, Jobs returns to California and begins developing a partnership with Steve 'Woz' Wozniak. While working at Atari, Inc., the duo creates a successful arcade game, though Jobs inequitably distributes the salary. They eventually decide to commercialize a prototype for a personal home computer, leading to the founding of Apple Computer in a family garage workshop.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The film follows Steve Jobs from 1974 to 2001. After dropping out of Reed College and traveling to India, Jobs partners with Steve Wozniak to form Apple Computer in a garage. They release the Apple I and later the successful Apple II. As Apple grows, Jobs becomes increasingly erratic, leading to a rift with friends and the eventual recruitment of John Sculley as CEO. Jobs is moved to the Macintosh Group, where he forces out the original leader to take his place. Despite the 1984 Macintosh launch, the product is deemed a failure due to high costs, and Jobs is forced out of the company in 1985. In 1996, Jobs returns to Apple as a consultant after the company buys NeXT. He becomes CEO, fires Gil Amelio, and works with Jony Ive to reinvent the company's design. The film concludes with Jobs recording the 'Think Different' commercial in 1997 and introducing the iPod at an Apple Town Hall meeting in 2001.
