Full plot (contains spoilers)

Joe Dirt, a janitor at a Los Angeles radio station, tells a shock jock about being abandoned at the Grand Canyon as a child. He recounts a series of bizarre adventures across America, including finding 'meteorite' (airplane waste), working at an oil well in North Dakota, meeting a fireworks salesman in New Mexico, and encountering a serial killer in Indiana. In Louisiana, he is mistaken for a hero after a mustard gas explosion and learns about his parents' rare Rambler Wagon. While working as an alligator wrangler, he realizes his real last name is Nunamaker. He eventually finds his old home in Baton Rouge, only to find they moved. Back in LA, Joe learns his parents are alive but only want him for his fame to sell clown figurines. He cuts ties with them. After a brief period of despair, his friend Brandy arrives, revealing she lied about his parents' deaths to protect him from their greed. Joe suffers a head injury in a police encounter but eventually recovers at Brandy's house, surrounded by his new family of friends, and prepares to drive off with them.
