Full plot (contains spoilers)
Two farmers clash. Jofroi is old, and he has sold an orchard to the young Fonse. Fonse wants to pull up the trees, which have been unproductive for years, and sow wheat instead. But Jofroi defends the trees he has tended for forty years and threatens to kill Fonse if he removes them. He then threatens to kill himself and holds the whole village to ransom for two months. When he dies of entirely natural causes, Fonse decides to keep a few trees in memory of the old man.
