A disfigured bounty-hunter seeks vengeance against the man who destroyed his family and branded his face.
The story
In 1876, Confederate soldier Jonah Hex is forced to kill his best friend, Jeb, after refusing an order to burn a hospital. A vengeful Quentin Turnbull subsequently murders Hex's wife and son, brands Hex's face, and fakes his own death. Now a disfigured bounty-hunter, Hex is hired by Union Lieutenant Grass to track down Turnbull, who is planning to use an experimental weapon to attack the United States. Hex must navigate a series of dangerous encounters, including a gladiator circus and a confrontation with a former associate, to stop Turnbull's destructive plans.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
After his family is murdered and his face branded by Quentin Turnbull, Jonah Hex is healed by the Crow people, granting him the ability to communicate with the dead. In 1876, President Grant hires Hex to stop Turnbull, who intends to use an experimental weapon to attack the U.S. Hex tracks Turnbull through various locations, including a gladiator circus in South Carolina where he kills a former associate, Slocum. Hex eventually seeks help from the ghost of his friend Jeb. After being shot by Turnbull, Hex is healed again by the Crow. He eventually infiltrates Turnbull's ironclad warship, kills Turnbull's assistant Burke, and faces Turnbull. During the final confrontation, Hex jams the weapon with his hatchet, causing it to explode and kill Turnbull and his men. Grant offers Hex a pardon and the position of Sheriff of the United States, which he declines, choosing instead to ride off with Lilah Black.
