Full plot (contains spoilers)

Michel (Gérard Philipe) has stolen money from the till at the department store where he works. He needs it to carry out his plan: to take a trip with Juliette (Suzanne Cloutier), whom he is very much in love with. But he ends up in prison. His dreams take him to a Provençal village whose name no one knows and where nobody remembers anything. Before long, he finds Juliette there, being courted by a mysterious and unsettling château owner who turns out to be Bluebeard (Jean-Roger Caussimon). Juliette is about to marry the château owner when the prison bell rings, waking Michel from his dreams. Once awake, Michel learns that the complaint filed against him has been withdrawn by his boss, Monsieur Bellanger, who looks like the château owner/Bluebeard. He also learns that Juliette was the one who insisted that Michel be released, and that this same Juliette is about to give her hand in marriage to Monsieur Bellanger. Desperate, Michel decides to return to the land of forgetfulness from which waking had pulled him.
