Full plot (contains spoilers)

In 1996, a teenager named Alex Vreeke finds a board game that transforms into a video game cartridge. Upon playing it, he is sucked into the game and remains there for twenty years. In the present day, four students—Spencer, Fridge, Bethany, and Martha—are in detention and find the same game. They are transported into a jungle as avatars: Spencer as a muscular archaeologist, Fridge as a small zoologist, Bethany as a male cartographer, and Martha as a martial arts expert. They encounter Alex, who has been trapped since 1996 and is now a pilot avatar. The group must retrieve a magical jewel called the 'Jaguar's Eye' from the corrupt archaeologist Russell Van Pelt to break a curse and escape. They successfully defeat Van Pelt, break the curse, and return to the real world. They find the Vreeke home restored and meet the adult Alex, who explains his long absence. The four students form a bond and eventually destroy the game to ensure no one else gets trapped.
