An arrogant factory director’s son must learn to work alongside his fellow apprentices.
The story
Theo Brakke, the arrogant son of an aircraft factory director, wins a rowing regatta, but his poor academic performance puts his place at school at risk. After speaking with Theo’s homeroom teacher, his father withdraws him from school and sends him to begin an apprenticeship at the family’s aircraft factory, hoping that working alongside others will strengthen his character. The other apprentices welcome Theo, but he regards himself as superior because of his family position. Their attempts, along with those of instructor Roth, to bring him into the group initially fail.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Theo Brakke, the arrogant son of an aircraft factory director, wins a rowing regatta. However, because of his poor academic performance and the risk that he will be held back a grade, he should not have been allowed to compete. After talking with Theo’s homeroom teacher, his father withdraws him from school and has him begin an apprenticeship at his aircraft factory, hoping that the camaraderie there will strengthen Theo’s character. Theo initially treats the factory’s other apprentices with contemptuous condescension, even though they welcome him warmly. As the director’s son, he feels superior to the others. All attempts by his fellow apprentices and the instructor, Roth, to integrate Theo into the group fail. Only after his companions save him from drowning and prevent his father from firing him does Theo realize that his arrogance was a serious mistake.
