Cast

When a sect gathers for Comet Calypso’s close approach, a teenager learns that its hoped-for journey to Jupiter depends on a mass-suicide ritual.

The story

Barbara and Thomas take their teenage daughter Lea and their son Paul to a remote rural community, where they are members of a sect. A guru has summoned a group there for Comet Calypso, which will soon pass very close to Earth. The sect believes the encounter will let them travel spiritually to Jupiter and find eternal life in paradise. Though Lea initially defends the sect’s teachings against her classmates, she is horrified when she realizes that the ritual’s “shedding” of physical shells means the believers are planning a mass suicide.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Barbara and Thomas set off with their teenage daughter Lea and their son Paul for a remote rural community. They are members of a sect. A guru has summoned a group there for the arrival of Comet Calypso, which will soon pass very close to Earth. The cult believes this encounter will allow them to travel spiritually to Jupiter and find a paradisiacal eternal life there. At first, Lea defends the sect’s teachings against her classmates, but she is horrified when she realizes that the comet ritual involves “shedding” their physical shells—in other words, the believers are planning a mass suicide. She pretends to go along with the ritual and also allows her parents to connect Paul, who has severe intellectual disabilities, to a poison drip. At the last moment of the ritual, Lea tampers only with her own drip. As the cult members around her lose consciousness, she frees herself and escapes into the open. In the final scenes, the comet is shown streaking across the sky as a gigantic fireball and returning to Jupiter. Whether the ritual had the effect the sect hoped for is left open.
