Two thirteen-year-old boys face a shifting moral world as sexual liberation and redevelopment reach their conservative Finnish town.
The story
Thirteen-year-old schoolboys Vesa and Kaarlo live in a conservative, religious town in northern Finland. In the 1970s, the sexual revolution reaches even this community. As adults attempt to embrace sexual freedom and new ways of relating to one another, the boys—on the threshold of adulthood—must navigate the effects of traditional moral values breaking down and find their place in a rapidly changing world. Change is also coming to the town itself: a large-scale redevelopment is planned, and the father of one of the boys is actively involved in it.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film’s main characters are 13-year-old schoolboys Vesa and Kaarlo. They live in a conservative, religious town in northern Finland. But the 1970s have arrived, and even this place has been reached by the sexual revolution. While the adults try to become sexually liberated and learn to love and feel each other’s emotions in a new way, their children—just on the threshold of adulthood—must deal with the consequences of traditional moral values breaking down and find their place in a world changing before their eyes. The situation is made worse by the fact that the town where the boys live is also about to change: it is facing a large-scale redevelopment, in which the father of one of the boys is actively involved.
