Full plot (contains spoilers)
Princess Christine of Schenckenberg-Nürtlingen is to be engaged to Count von Hohenegg. Archduke Benedikt, a former friend of her mother’s, acts as the go-between. For this purpose, Christine and her mother travel to Bad Ischl, where her future husband and the Archduke are also staying. The Archduke is to open the annual “Kaiser Ball” on behalf of His Majesty the Emperor. The occasion is meant to give the two a chance to get to know each other better. However, Christine, who has arrived incognito, falls in love there with the Prussian Count von der Görtzen, who is also staying in Bad Ischl and is a close friend of Count von Hohenegg. Meanwhile, von Hohenegg has taken an interest in Franzi, a pretty seamstress who was supposed to deliver a dress and is mistaken for Christine because she happens to arrive just when Christine is expected. Rienössl, the hotel’s chief porter, contributes to the mix-up. In his overzealousness, he reports Princess Christine to the authorities, mistaking her for an impostor, and this sets the truth coming to light. Von der Görtzen, who had assumed he had fallen in love with an impostor, realizes that he is actually face to face with a real princess. To his surprise, Count von Hohenegg discovers that the young woman he has fallen in love with is the seamstress Franzi. Before the couples who love each other can get together, they have a few more complications to overcome. But von der Görtzen gets up the courage to fight for Princess Christine and also clears up the misunderstanding between his friend von Hohenegg and Franzi, leaving nothing to stand in the way of a happy ending.
