A Vienna coffeehouse owner’s expansion plans collide with those of a Turkish businessman who has leased the same neighboring premises.
The story
Johann Stanzerl runs the Prinz Eugen coffeehouse in Vienna, which he regards as the neighborhood’s last Austrian establishment. When the tailor next door closes, he decides to expand into the adjoining premises, leasing them from Count von Wildmannsdorf and paying an illegal key-money fee. But the count has also leased the same space to Mustafa Öztürk, a Turkish businessman who arrives with his family as Johann prepares to break through the dividing wall. Mustafa plans to open a Turkish specialty restaurant and has bought the entire building, including the Stanzerls’ apartment. Their competing plans put the two businessmen at odds.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Johann Stanzerl, the owner of the Prinz Eugen coffeehouse in Vienna, named after Prince Eugene of Savoy, finds himself surrounded by Turkish businesses and restaurants. With his regular local customers and his wife Sofie’s traditional pastries, he sees himself as the last Austrian bastion and runs the only Austrian establishment still left in his neighborhood. After the Austrian tailor next door also shuts down, Johann decides to expand his business. He signs a lease with the owner, Count von Wildmannsdorf, and pays him an illegal key money fee. However, the count turns out to be a crook: before emigrating to Indonesia, he had leased the same commercial premises a second time, this time to the Turkish businessman Mustafa Öztürk. When Johann wants to break through the wall into the neighboring premises, Mustafa and his family show up instead of the Polish crew of dodgy tradesmen Johann was expecting, and Mustafa starts tearing down the wall from his side at the same time. Mustafa wants to open a Turkish specialty restaurant with his wife, Sabrie, and make room to expand his own business. But Mustafa has bought the entire building from the count, including the Stanzerls’ apartment. A friendship develops between Sofie and Sabrie, and when a mobile Chinese wok-food stand stops in front of Mustafa’s house and Johann’s Prinz Eugen café, the two men also begin to join forces against the newcomer. However, Mustafa threatens Johann with an eviction lawsuit. At the opening of Mustafa’s restaurant, the dispute between him and Johann begins to escalate. A brawl breaks out between Mustafa’s and Johann’s supporters, ending with police and paramedics arriving with flashing lights. Johann and Mustafa make peace and agree to keep running their two businesses side by side.
