A liqueur maker recruits unlikely allies when his wife’s supposed contact with her deceased first husband disrupts their marriage.

The story

Liqueur manufacturer Fritz is happily married to Philine until she becomes increasingly convinced that she hears the voice of her deceased first husband, Leo, over the telephone and is in spiritual contact with him. The claim strains the marriage, with Leo’s presence becoming a constant source of conflict between the couple. Seeing no other way to counter Philine’s fixation, Fritz gathers allies, including Leo’s brother Paul Theodor, a devoted jazz lover, and Paul’s five sons. The elegant Margot and the charming young Susanne also join the effort to end the supposed haunting, while Isolde the duck adds further confusion.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Liqueur manufacturer Fritz is actually quite happily married to Philine, but she has a powerful fixation that threatens to plunge their marriage into a serious crisis. The middle-aged woman is a little excitable and, what is more, has an esoteric bent: she increasingly claims to hear the voice of her deceased first husband, Leo, over the phone, and thus to be in spiritual contact with him. Philine’s current husband, Fritz, is understandably fed up, and before long the deceased is a constant presence in their marriage, so that Fritz and Philine are continually at loggerheads. The liquor manufacturer soon sees no other option than to find allies in his battle against Philine’s fancies. Among them are the dead man’s brother, Paul Theodor, whose great love is jazz music, and Paul’s five sons. The elegant Margot and the charming young Susanne also do their part to put an end to the haunting. And then there is Isolde the duck, who causes even more confusion…
