A wealthy factory heir who would rather compete than work must find a proper job after his girlfriend refuses his marriage proposal.

The story

Wolf Kruse, the wealthy son of a factory owner, prefers sports competitions—car races, boat races and horse shows—to work. His longtime girlfriend, designer Brigitte, wants a partner who works honestly and can build a stable life, so she turns down his marriage proposal, saying she could imagine marrying him only if he gets a proper job. Wolf tries to find work, but his father, Karl, throws him out of the office when he hears Wolf wants to take over the company. Wolf starts as a porter at a wholesale market and moves through other jobs, struggling to hold on to them.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The wealthy factory owner's son, Wolf Kruse, doesn't think much of work. He would rather take part in every sporting competition he hears about, whether it's car races, boat races, or horse shows. His longtime girlfriend, the designer Brigitte, has long since stopped being impressed. She wants a man who works honestly and can build a stable foundation for his life. So she turns down Wolf's marriage proposal. She could imagine marrying him only once he has a proper job. Wolf now tries to find work. His father, Karl, immediately throws him out of his office when he hears that his irresponsible son wants to take over the company. Wolf therefore starts out as a porter at a wholesale market, and eventually becomes a detective, swimming instructor, advertising model, and waiter. He can't hold on to any of the jobs for long; he either gets fired or gives in to Brigitte's objections—for example, she is far from pleased to see him teaching swimming to numerous women. But Wolf isn't the only one with problems: his niece Renate is worried, too. Her father, Leo—a partner in Karl Kruse's company and married to Wolf's sister Therese—absolutely does not want to meet her new boyfriend, Bobby. He thinks Bobby is an uncouth good-for-nothing who may play the guitar, when in fact Bobby is studying graphic design and, along with his friends, converting an old shed into a youth club. Wolf persuades Leo to hire his good acquaintance “Robert Berger” at the company, without Leo knowing that Robert is actually Bobby. Leo is very impressed with Robert, but one day secretly follows Renate to the youth club, which is just opening. The dilapidated club collapses, and Leo discovers that Robert is Bobby and is horrified. Wolf has landed yet another job: he drives Brigitte and her mannequins to Italy as a bus driver, where a fashion show is to be held. On the way, they pick up Bobby and Renate, who had secretly planned to travel to Italy by Vespa but had broken down halfway there. In Verona, Wolf and Brigitte get back together, but the mood is spoiled when Wolf suddenly fills in for a sick driver in a boat race and wins. Back when he was a packer and a detective, Wolf had been investigating a group of Sicilians who were secretly making goods disappear from the wholesale market, but he had always lost their trail. In Italy, the group offers him a sealed envelope to take back to Germany and deliver at the wholesale market. He agrees and eventually turns over to the police the mastermind behind the operation, the head of the wholesale market. Brigitte can see that he is trying to work honestly, but accuses Wolf of only taking jobs he enjoys. In the end, he secretly works as a mechanic at his father's company and develops a new machine that makes production easier. His father is delighted and glad that his son has finally found his way to serious work. Renate and Bobby's friends, meanwhile, are thrilled because an unknown benefactor has had the run-down youth club demolished and rebuilt in a modern style. They suspect Wolf is behind the gift, but it turns out that it was actually Leo, who has had a change of heart and also accepts Bobby and Renate's relationship. And in the end, Wolf has passed his test of character and has finally become a man fit to marry.
