Full plot (contains spoilers)
The unemployed secretary Käte applies for a job at the piano factory owned by businessman Helmut Hofert because of a misunderstanding. Although he does not actually need an additional secretary at the moment, he hires her because he finds her very attractive. At first, Käte is given very few tasks, and she soon gets bored in her new job. Käte’s friend Trude also works as a secretary, at a different company, but unlike Käte, she is so swamped with work that she often has to work late into the night. Käte tells her boss that she is dissatisfied with the small number of tasks assigned to her. At the same time, she talks to Trude. The two women decide to call in sick together the next day and then swap roles the day after that. Neither of them can know that their respective bosses have meanwhile reconsidered and changed their secretaries’ workloads. In retrospect, because of this, the role swap would not have been necessary at all.
