When Max takes Mario under his wing, his good intentions disrupt his home life and entangle him in a missing-money mystery.

The story

Max takes Mario Krüger under his wing, hoping to prevent him from slipping down the social ladder, and even turns his apartment into an art studio so Mario can take up hobby painting. But Mario’s loud stereo and Max’s neglect of his holiday plans drive Hertha to move into the garden hut. Max’s already crowded life grows more complicated when money goes missing from the business, while his neighbor Erna asks him to help persuade a mountaineer to marry her. At the same time, two women in Max’s family seek his support over their partners’ infidelity, as suspicion falls on Mario because he was apparently at the scene.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Max has decided to look after Mario Krüger because he wants to prevent him from sliding down the social ladder. As a result, he has to cancel his holiday trip with Hertha for lack of time. He sets up an art studio in his apartment, since Mario is supposed to become a hobby painter. As if that weren’t enough, Mario brings along his stereo system, which plays loudly in the apartment. For these reasons, Hertha moves into the garden hut until Max comes to his senses. But Max soon runs into problems, and more than he would have liked: a large sum of money has gone missing from the business. His neighbor Erna Mischke wants him to keep his promise to help her get the mountaineer Ferdinand Holz to finally marry her. Max’s daughter-in-law Waltraut is getting fed up with her husband Horst Baumann (Max’s son) cheating on her, and Monika is also having problems with her boyfriend Jens (Max’s grandson) having affairs. Both women want Max to comfort them and talk with them. Meanwhile, Mario, probably the only person who was at the scene, comes under suspicion of having stolen the missing money from the business, but Maxe, like many others, does not believe it. To raise the money anyway, Mario is even willing to sell the stereo system he loves more than anything, something he would normally never have done. Eventually, though, it becomes clear that Erna had put the money, which was lying around in the open, somewhere safe, and Maxe is relieved. Once Mario’s innocence is proven, he can buy back his stereo system. In the end, everyone makes up, Erna finally gets Ferdinand’s “yes” to their wedding, and Hertha moves back into the apartment as well.
