A lawyer rebuilding her life is drawn into a convicted man’s case when a mysterious caller threatens more murders.

The story

After being abducted, shot, and left in a coma, lawyer Anna Winter narrowly escapes death and tries to begin again, leaving her law practice for a legal-advice call center. Soon, a mysterious caller invokes her past and demands that she get Morlock, a man convicted of murder, out of prison—or there will be more murders. Anna consults Morlock’s lawyer, Rothkamm, and then Patrick Stimmler, who believes Morlock is innocent. Stimmler shows her evidence suggesting that a serial killer may have been active years before the murder for which Morlock was convicted, drawing Anna into the case.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After being abducted, lawyer Anna Winter was shot and fell into a coma. When she woke up and narrowly escaped death, Anna decided to start a new life and gave up her law practice to take a job at a legal advice call center. She quickly befriends her coworker Caroline, who offers to help Anna furnish her apartment. But just a few days after her first day at work, Anna receives a call from a mysterious caller who reminds her of her past. He demands that she get Morlock, who was wrongly convicted, out of prison, or there will be more murders. The caller directs Anna to Morlock’s lawyer, Rothkamm, whom she visits immediately. Rothkamm immediately suspects Patrick Stimmler is behind the anonymous calls, since Stimmler firmly believes Morlock is innocent despite the evidence against him. On his lawyer’s advice, Morlock admitted to the crime in court so that he could plead manslaughter. Anna visits Stimmler, and it turns out he is not the caller. Stimmler shows Anna the evidence he has gathered suggesting Morlock was not the killer, and that the real culprit is a serial killer who had already been murdering people for many years before the murder for which Morlock was convicted. However, Morlock has an alibi for the earlier cases. The killer strangles his victims and injects them with various stimulants; they are also all dehydrated. Stimmler suspects the killer is subjecting his victims to a kind of ritual punishment. Anna visits Morlock in prison and now also believes he is innocent. The anonymous caller forces Stimmler to call Anna and lure her to him. Stimmler tells her about another murder, in which a local woman was killed—the serial killer’s first murder. When Anna arrives, the house is empty. She finds only the evidence Stimmler has gathered about the serial killer and takes it with her. She visits the woman who found the first body. Anna takes up the case and goes to the spot in the woods where the first body was found. The anonymous caller keeps harassing her and sends her flowers. She talks to her former coworker Marco Lorenz about a meeting with the caller, which the caller has demanded. Although Marco advises her against it, Anna decides to meet the caller at the main train station. But the caller notices that Marco has followed her and is angry because he had demanded that Anna come alone. A chase ensues, and it ends with Anna watching as the caller, whom she believes to be the killer, beats Marco and leaves him in a coma. At home, Anna finds her apartment filled with white roses, and her gun is no longer in its drawer. Panicked, she leaves her apartment. She receives a call from Caroline’s phone, but the killer is on the line, and she learns that he has kidnapped her friend Caroline. She follows the caller’s instructions and finds the body of a young woman in a subway tunnel—another of the killer’s victims. He then sends her to Rothkamm’s law office. There, Anna finds Stimmler’s body. Rothkamm appears shortly afterward, and Anna thinks he is the killer and knocks him down. But the killer calls her, and she realizes that Rothkamm was innocent and that she knocked him down by mistake. From photographs she finds at Rothkamm’s office, she works out that the son of the woman who found the first body is the killer. It turns out that the parents knew about their son’s murders but did not turn him in. The son committed his first murder to secure his father’s love. When the father learns this, he hangs himself. Anna drives into the woods to the place where the father killed himself. There, the killer gets Anna into his clutches. He wants Anna to be his judge and demands that she declare him innocent, arguing that all the women had seduced men and that he had merely brought them to justice. Anna eventually manages to overpower the killer and free herself and Caroline from his clutches.
