A climate-conscious teenager makes her parents follow her sustainability rules in exchange for focusing more on school.

The story

Seventeen-year-old Lilly Wilmers is committed to protecting the climate, but her activism has led her to neglect school. Her parents, Martin, a chief physician, and Nina, who runs an agency, disagree about how to address this. Nina proposes a bargain: they will follow Lilly’s climate-protection rules if Lilly gives more attention to her studies. The family changes its routines, from leaving the car at home and cooking instead of relying on ready-made meals to washing clothes at low temperatures. As the parents struggle with the rules and try to evade them, disagreements emerge about sustainability, their household, and their life together.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Seventeen-year-old Lilly Wilmers is in the thick of puberty and committed to protecting the climate. Her parents, Martin and Nina, refuse to accept that she has been neglecting school for some time because of it. Martin, who works as a chief physician, initially tries to persuade her to study by buying her a trip, while Nina, who runs an agency, has a better idea. She promises Lilly that she and Martin will follow Lilly’s climate-protection rules if Lilly, in return, devotes more attention to her schoolwork. From then on, they leave the car at home for their commutes, replace ready-made meals with home-cooked food, and wash their laundry with lavender at low temperatures. They are also supposed to clear out some household belongings in the interest of sustainability. Lilly’s parents find the rules increasingly difficult to follow and try to get around them by cheating. But they also discover that they have different views about what should be given away and about their life so far. When Nina and Martin let other activists camp in the garden, they run into an old acquaintance, Bernd, a former Greenpeace activist, and jealousy enters the picture too. While Nina takes part in a demonstration to try something new, Martin tends to withdraw. Then it becomes clear that Lilly will not pass her Abitur exams, which causes even more friction between Martin and Nina, and they take a break from each other. Nina and Martin try to make changes in their lives. In a conversation with the hospital board, Martin bluffs, saying that he will not generate even more profits at the patients’ expense and would rather leave—in the end, this costs him his job. Nina makes an employee a partner at her agency so she can finally ease off a little. This gives them both the chance to talk to each other calmly. At the end, Martin asks Nina whether her agency also places doctors.
