The story
Ambitious media personality Alison Scott is promoted to an on-air role in Los Angeles. While celebrating, she has a one-night stand with Ben Stone, a wisecracking slacker. Following a period of separation, Alison discovers she is pregnant and contacts Ben. Despite his initial hesitation and their vastly different lifestyles, Ben agrees to support her. As they attempt to navigate the reality of impending parenthood, they must reconcile their personal differences and the pressures of their respective lives while trying to figure out if their relationship can survive the transition to becoming parents.

After a one-night stand leads to an unplanned pregnancy, Alison Scott and Ben Stone decide to try and make their relationship work. While Ben's family is overjoyed and Alison's mother suggests an abortion, Alison chooses to keep the baby. As they grow closer, Ben offers a ring, though Alison is more concerned with keeping the pregnancy a secret from her employers. Meanwhile, Alison's sister Debbie deals with a complicated marriage to Pete. A series of conflicts, including a road trip to Las Vegas and a fallout over Pete's behavior, leads to a temporary breakup. Ben eventually matures, finding a job and preparing for fatherhood. When Alison goes into labor, Ben takes charge, and they ultimately welcome a baby girl and begin a new life together.
