Full plot (contains spoilers)

Roni Beck is an extremely unsuccessful comedian who, because he cannot afford a place of his own, lives with his mother in a retirement home. When the home’s director, Serge, discovers him, however, he compels Roni to work as an assistant caregiver in exchange for room and board. While working, Roni writes a cabaret show, but it fails completely. Serge, firmly convinced of his own cabaret abilities, then writes a show for Roni. A fast-paced story unfolds, featuring many colorful characters and many tragicomic moments. In the end, one of Serge’s bizarre cabaret performances reshuffles all the relationships, and nothing is as it once was. The film’s subplot revolves around the retirement home’s financial situation. While Serge lines his own pockets at the residents’ expense, the home’s owner, Ernst, tries to close it down, until André Klein, a retired stockbroker, promptly buys the entire property.
