Across different eras, a succession of Viennese women named Mizzi try to turn powerful rulers away from war and toward love.
The story
Mizzi is presented as the eternal feminine in the guise of a supposedly “typical” Viennese woman, appearing as a different woman across the centuries. Her charm and powers of seduction repeatedly bring her into the orbit of powerful rulers and military leaders. In each episode, she tries to draw these “lords of the world” toward love rather than war and conquest. The story moves through several periods, beginning in late antiquity under Roman rule in Central Europe, then passing through plague-ravaged times and the Congress of Vienna. Each new era gives Mizzi another chance to influence the powerful men around her.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Mizzi is the name of the eternal feminine in the guise of a supposedly “typical” Viennese woman who, over the centuries, has often guided or influenced the course of history through her charm, sweetness, and powers of seduction. In this time-traveling tale, Mizzi is a different pretty Viennese woman each time. In every episode, she throws herself wholeheartedly into her efforts to enchant the martial “lords of the world,” hoping they will devote themselves more to love in the boudoir than to war on the battlefield and conquest. The first Mizzi appears during the era of Roman rule over Central Europe in late antiquity; the second during the wretched times of plague and devastation. Another Mizzi tries to captivate various rulers during the Congress of Vienna (1814/1815), whether the man she is wooing is Austrian, Danish, or French. Finally come the deeply brown times, when the Mizzi of that era has to deal with a certain A. H. After the end of the war and the occupation, the last Mizzi accompanies the events leading to the restoration of Austrian sovereignty in 1955.
