A journalist caring for his father with dementia searches for an elderly woman who vanishes during a staged publicity campaign for assisted death.
The story
In near-future Berlin, a rising number of people with dementia wander the streets while care homes face staff shortages. Private institute Exsolvo promotes what it calls a groundbreaking, peaceful form of assisted death as a solution. Journalist Jens Kurzhals, known as “J. K.,” is asked to generate publicity for the institute, a task complicated by his own responsibility for his father, who has dementia. When an elderly woman disappears just as Exsolvo plans to stage her “return home” as an advertising film, J. K. begins looking for her.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Berlin, in the near future. Alongside everyday crime, the capital is plagued by a growing problem: What is to be done with the many people with dementia who wander the streets and disrupt public life? Care homes are struggling with staff shortages. Mobile response teams do pick up the confused elderly—but where are they supposed to take them? The private institute Exsolvo is promoting a “new,” groundbreaking idea: a peaceful, assisted death, as in the old days. Journalist Jens Kurzhals (“J. K.”), who also cares for his father, who has dementia, is supposed to generate the necessary publicity on Exsolvo’s behalf. When an elderly woman, whose “return home” is to be staged like an advertising film, suddenly disappears, J. K. sets out to find her.
