A countess racing to secure a fortune must find a substitute groom when her fiancé is captured en route to their wedding.
The story
Countess Dolly, also called Doddy, stands to inherit 10 million marks if she is happily married by her 21st birthday, which is only a day away. Her fiancé Frank, an African explorer, is traveling to their wedding when an emergency landing near the equator leads to his capture. With the deadline looming and Frank unable to arrive, Doddy must find a substitute husband so that the inheritance condition can be met. The prospect sets the wedding in motion, though the story’s initial setup leaves the intended couple’s future uncertain.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
If Countess Dolly/Doddy is happily married by her 21st birthday, she is to inherit 10 million marks (euros). Her birthday is tomorrow. Unfortunately, her fiancé Frank, an African explorer who is on his way to the wedding, has to make an emergency landing at the equator. He is captured there, so she has to find a substitute husband. The wedding takes place, and an argument soon breaks out. But Frank returns just in time, and they celebrate their reconciliation. Frank, too, had been married to a chief’s daughter—but against his will. The story ends happily.
